Thought Leaders for the Satellite Communication Industry in India
SIA-India hails DOT's decision to overhaul the legal framework governing telecommunication to keep pace with modernization
SatCom Industry Association of India [SIA-India] hails the Government of India, Ministry of Communications, Department of Telecommunications decision to bring out a new legal framework for the telecom sector. The initiative to overhaul the legal framework governing Telecommunication in India to keep pace with modernization is forward-looking and would be a huge boost for the SatCom sector.

The objective behind this consultation is to do away with the antiquated regime and bring a modern and future-ready legal framework, therefore the consultation paper attempting to address just a few parameters would defy the whole purpose.

SIA-India submits that i) any new framework must encourage all digital communication technologies without a preference for limited technologies; ii) Connectivity to the remotest corner of the country at affordable prices, for personal, enterprise, and government use; iii) Flexibility and agility of regulatory framework to adapt to changing technology and services trend; iv) Ease of doing business for the industry stakeholders; v) Harmonized with global best practices arrived at international forums like ITU; vi) Spectrum allocation must be based on International best practices.

"The initiative to overhaul the legal framework governing Telecommunication in India to keep pace with modernization is forward-looking and would be a huge fillip for the SatCom sector. Hauling up the regulatory framework that is based on acts more than 100 years old to a newer version that relates to the latest technology, business and governance trends will, however, need a much more serious effort than the time allocated,"
Anil Prakash (Director General- SIA-India)
